Biography

Michael Clark is a filmmaker and visual artist working across documentary, spatial video, and public screen environments. He has been working with images for over twenty years, with more than a decade of professional experience.

While much of his commissioned work supports not-for-profit organisations, universities, local government, and corporate clients, Michael’s practice is grounded in observation. His work centres on human experience, landscape, and the quiet ways image can shape how we relate to one another and to place.

Originally trained in civil and structural engineering, Michael returned to study film at Curtin University, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Screen Arts in 2015. This shift from structural systems to visual systems continues to inform his approach to composition, pacing, and spatial awareness.

Alongside filmmaking, photography remains a foundational part of his practice. Beginning with his father’s Olympus OM-20, Michael developed a lasting interest in documentary and street photography. His photographic work has been exhibited at Perth Centre for Photography, with selected publications available through Planet Books.

His projects have taken him to Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, and India, though he remains deeply interested in capturing stories and perspectives within Australia.

He also founded Observation Studio in 2024, and is a Board Director for Befriend.

Michael is available for commissions in Australia and abroad, and also provides consultations around all things visual and communications.
